What each session is like

  • Tokyo hours

Price action tends to be calm and range-bound. The one reliable move is around the Tokyo fix at 09:55 Japan time.

  • London hours

The largest market by volume, and where the Tokyo range most often breaks.

  • London and New York overlap

The busiest hours of the day. US economic releases land here too, so both ranges and spreads move more.

Method and specification

  • How it is determined

Everything is judged in UTC. Daylight saving switches automatically from the date: Europe from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, the US from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and Australia from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.

  • When to use it

Deciding which hours to trade / preparing for movement around data releases

  • Please note

These are the conventional market hours. Broker trading hours and holiday handling vary. Most server times are UTC+2 or +3, which shifts where the daily candle closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hours move the most?

Generally the London and New York overlap - the evening in Japan - has the highest volume and the widest ranges, followed by the London open. Tokyo hours tend to be calmer and more range-bound.

Why do the hours shift with daylight saving?

Europe and the US each run their own daylight saving periods, during which local time moves an hour closer to UTC. The switch dates differ between them, so for a few weeks each year the London and New York overlap changes shape. This page works it out from the date.

Can I trade at the weekend?

No. The FX market stops when New York closes on Friday and restarts when Sydney opens on Monday. In between, prices do not update and orders will not fill. It can also reopen with a gap, so take care with positions held over the weekend.

What time base is shown?

Everything is judged in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), with Japan time (UTC+9) shown alongside. Note that broker server times are commonly UTC+2 or UTC+3, which shifts where the daily candle closes.
