How to read this result

  • Profit / loss

The price move converted to pips, multiplied by the value of one pip for that pair. A positive figure is a profit, a negative one a loss.

  • Pips gained

The move you captured, expressed in pips. Changing the lot size does not change the pips - only the amount of money.

  • Value per pip

What one pip is worth. It scales with lot size, so check first whether that figure is an amount you are comfortable with.

Method and specification

  • Main inputs

Direction / currency pair / lot size / entry price / exit price

  • When to use it

Checking the result before closing a position / converting a past trade into money

  • Not included

Spread, swap and commission are not included. One lot is treated as 100,000 units (100 ounces for gold).

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spread and commission included?

No. The calculation uses only the difference between your entry and exit prices. On a real account, spread, swap and commission are added or subtracted on top of this. As a rough guide, subtracting the spread from your exit price will bring the figure closer to reality.

Can I calculate a short position?

Yes. Switch the direction to Sell and a falling price is treated as a profit and a rising price as a loss. For a buy it is the other way round. Getting the direction wrong flips the sign of the result, so check it carefully.

How is profit calculated for dollar pairs and gold?

For pairs such as EUR/USD and for XAU/USD the result is first worked out in US dollars and then converted to yen at the USD/JPY rate. That is why the USD/JPY field appears. Entering the current rate there brings the converted amount closer to what you would actually see.

How big is one pip?

For yen pairs such as USD/JPY one pip is a move of 0.01, for dollar pairs such as EUR/USD it is 0.0001, and for XAU/USD (gold) it is 0.1. Some brokers label these differently.
